The sad story of Lucia

Lucia Lucia Lucia Lucia

Lucia's pictures are heartbreaking. Her white fur filthy and matted, she had to be shaved...

It was Saturday May 22nd, and I was busy packing for our move out of Dudley the next day when my cell phone rang. It was Michelle from Webster Animal Control. She needed help with a stray cat in Dudley as it was out of her jurisdiction. A woman who feeds the neighborhood cats had a newcomer turn up, and the cat needed medical attention. The good samaritan was very frustrated after calling numerous places for help.

When I arrived the cat was already in a hav-a-hart trap and eating voraciously, the cat was starving and its beautiful white fur was dirty and matted. I called the vet on the way to let them know I was bringing a cat who needed urgent medical attention, she looked terrible and was emaciated. Once on the examination table at the vets, it was obvious she had no business being outside. Lucia had several large fur matts, some as large as 4 inches long...pulling at her delicate skin. She had a heart murmur and you could literally see every bone in her body. Beautiful long haired white cats are very adoptable, how did she end up on the street? As our vet carefully shaved her fur matts, she layed quiet and still as she knew she was getting much needed help. She got her rabies shot, dewormer, a distemper shot, and a flea treatment....who knows what type of parasites lurked inside this poor girl.

Lucia had the most beautiful emerald green eyes and silky soft long white fur, how could anyone dump such a beautiful cat? With permission, Lucia was a guest at the Webster Animal Shelter. I got to visit her everyday, but she did not gain weight. She ate and ate and ate but did not gain a ounce. On Friday May 28th she did not eat the food in front of her, and was not looking to be patted on the head. Her eyes looked glazed, she could not stand. I wrapped her in a towel, put her in a carrier and rushed her to the vet, but she had gone to heaven some time during the ride.

I hope I never see another cat like Lucia, it's heartbreaking; but unfortunately Lucia is not the only needy cat out there. If you witness someone dump an animal or abuse an animal, you are just as guilty as they are by not reporting it or cooperating with law enforcement as a witness.
